Like the AA & AAA Batteries, laptop batteries makes the charge to flow as a result of the Electrochemical reaction. It has positive and negative ends like other batteries.

Chemical Composition
From manufacturers point of view rechargeable batteries are not easy to design as compared to non-rechargeable batteries."In rechargeable battery, the electrochemical reactions are reversible. But in non-rechargeable battery, electrochemical reactions is not reversible. The electrochemical reaction consist of two sub-reactions as oxidation and reduction. In rechargeable batteries these reactions can be reversed while it is not possible in case other simple batteries."

Also laptop batteries are contains multiple internal cells. These can be arranged in series or in parallel in so as to supply the higher voltage to the laptop as it requires. Laptop batteries also contain a small circuit board to control the recharging status ob battery.
